Johannesburg - The bodyguard of the Nelson Mandela metro's deputy mayor has been shot by two unknown men, Eastern Cape police say.

Spokesperson Dumile Gwavu said the 44-year-old man was approached by two unknown men around 21:00 on Monday evening.

He is the bodyguard of deputy mayor Nancy Sihlwayi.

"The men drew firearms and a shoot-out ensued. The bodyguard was hit in the upper body," Gwavu said.

He said the man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was stable.

"The two men fled with the bodyguard's firearm, wallet and cellphone."

Police were investigating a case of armed robbery.

Gwavu said no arrests had been made.

More bad news from a failed province and yet more leaving for a better life in Cape Town.

Question: Since when do deputy mayor's (or deputy anything for that matter) need body guards?! How inept are the councellors if they feel their lives threatened by the very people they are suppose to serve... and know for that matter. Condolences to the body guards family - what a waste of a life.
