A two-door Maserati GranTurismo has been abandoned on UCT's campus in central Cape Town after crashing through a fence and into an outbuilding over the weekend.WATCH

Cape Town - A Maserati was found crashed and abandoned on the University of Cape Town's Hiddingh Campus in the Cape Town CBD on Sunday.

The white Maserati had landed on its side, resting against a damaged outbuilding. The car's windows were broken and the bonnet lifted off. It was still on the scene on Monday morning.

According to grounds staff on campus, the Maserati was speeding around a bend on Orange Street in the early hours of Sunday morning when it crashed through the fence and landed on a wall. The passengers apparently abandoned the car and ran away from the scene.

The vehicle has been identified as a Maserati GranTurismo. The base price starts from R2.2 million, according to Wheels24.

Curious passersby and students stopped to look at the damaged vehicle through the day.

A security guard said the vehicle is expected to be removed on Monday.

Western Cape police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed to News24 on Monday that an accident report had been registered, but could not provide any further details. The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, he said.

Cape Town Traffic Services spokesperson Richard Coleman told News24 that the accident was not reported to them, and that the police would investigate.

UCT media liaison officer Thami Nkwanyane was also unable to provide any more information on the incident, or when the car will be removed from UCT property.
