PIETERMARITZBURG’S beauty and brains, Riona Rajkumar was crowned the 2015 Mrs India South Africa in a glamourous affair on Saturday.

Now with her new title and business background, Rajkumar says she is focused on empowering women. “The entire experience was so amazing and inspiring. I am going to immerse myself in community work and women and youth empowerment,” said Rajkumar.

She was crowned Mrs India SA at a pageant held on the weekend at the Sibaya isiZulu Theatre. She also received the titles of Mrs Intellectual after a gruelling interview session, and the social responsibility Serve, Health and Empowerment (SHE) title.

“I was so overwhelmed and emotional when they announced my name as the winner. There were so many great contestants I was up against. The entire journey has just been amazing and this was one of the best pageants I have participated in,” said Rajkumar, still exhausted from the weeks of travelling and activities building up to the pageant.

The contestants participated in an itinerary of events which included overcoming one of Rajkumar’s fears by completing the Big Jump at the Moses Mabhida Stadium. “I am very afraid of heights and I was so proud of myself for completing the jump. My favourite part of the pageant was meeting and gaining relationships with everyone,” she said.

Rajkumar said she was very grateful to her team of supporters, her parents and husband, Naresh. “My achievement was only made possible because of the support. I want to thank my immediate family, my life coach Karen Valley, Karishma Bhola who helped me backstage and Chennel Jagesur of Fit Guru Consulting who helped me get in shape. I also want to thank my sponsors including Ashin Singh of Samrem,” she added.

Rajkumar, an investment banker at Nedbank in Pietermaritzburg, hopes to set up a women’s empowerment centre
