THE strong winds that blew across the Midlands yesterday left damage to health centres, shops and a racecourse.

There were reports that the Virgin Active gym in Cascades has been closed down until further notice after high winds damaged the roof. The health centre’s customers were encouraged to use other gyms. Attempts to get comment from Virgin Active were unsuccessful.

There were reports that a large section of the running rails at the Scottsville racecourse were blown over after a race. The racing was delayed for about an hour while the repairs were being done.

Shaun Parker, the stipendiary steward in Scottsville, said the race was delayed as they had to restabilise the running rails.

“This happened in between the races. We got all the races in, and there were no injuries or anything.”

The Msunduzi fire department said there had been several grass fires across city that they attended but they had not been called to any disasters.
