Pietermaritzburg - A Pietermaritzburg matric pupil has set her sights on a career in accounting after winning this year’s Accounting Olympiad.

Maritzburg Muslim School for Girls pupil Raadiyah Patel (17) scored 91% in the national competition hosted by the South African Institute of Professional Accountants (Saipa).

Raadiyah said she was exposed to the profession through her father, an accountant.

“My love and passion for accounting grew with the help of my teachers and my dad,” she said, adding that she was shocked by her win.

“The support I received from my school and my parents was amazing. All I want to do is use my skills to make a difference in the world,” said Raadiyah.

Raadiyah’s mother Yasmin, said: “No words can fully explain the feelings a parent experiences at any achievement of their children, be it big or small. Raadiyah is a very dedicated and hardworking student, and as a parent when you see your children harvesting the fruits of their efforts, your elation is immeasurable. I am and have always been extremely proud of her.

“Coming first in the country for this Olympiad is something that both my husband and I will hold very dear.”

Patel took home a trophy and certificate, R10 000 towards her registration fees for next year, a box filled with gadgets worth R20 000, and a colour printer for her school.

Faith Ngwenya, acting chief executive of Saipa, said the National Accounting Olympiad was aimed at creating a love for accounting among pupils.

“Accounting is about ensuring the country, a family, a company, have what it needs to survive and grow,” she said
