Cape Town - US-based internet media giant InterActiveCorp (IAC) has fired public relations executive Justine Sacco after she joked about getting Aids in Africa.

IAC said Sacco’s tweet was “offensive and does not reflect the views and values of IAC”.

Sacco tweeted: "Going to Africa. Hope I don't get AIDS. Just kidding. I'm white!"

While in flight to Cape Town, Sacco’s tweet went viral and IAC terminated her contract. #HasJustineLandedYet also became a top trending topic globally.

She apologised on Twitter but later deleted her account.

“There is no excuse for the hateful statements that have been made and we condemn them unequivocally. We hope, however, that time and action, and the forgiving human spirit, will not result in the wholesale condemnation of an individual who we have otherwise known to be a decent person at core,” IAC said in its statement.

IAC owns a number of digital businesses, from Vimeo and CollegeHumor to the Daily Beast.

On Saturday, a Tweeter from Cape Town, @Zac_R claimed that he “chatted” with Sacco’s father at Cape Town International Airport.

The father, who is South African, apparently said he chose to raise his daughter in the US because post-1994 South Africa “was too racist”.

The man apparently also said his daughter “would pay” for her offensive tweet and that “I'm so incredibly ashamed of her. She's a fucking idiot”.
