Durban - Two men convicted of murdering an elderly couple were sentenced to two life sentences each by the KwaZulu-Natal High Court, police said on Saturday.

The pair was also handed a 15 year jail term for robbery, said Major Thulani Zwane.

Khulekani Vezi, 33, and Muzikawubongwa Hlatshwayo, 47, appeared before the court on Friday.

"On 24 April, 2012 at approximately 17:00 the victims, Thumela Nkosi, 80, and his wife Agnes Nkosi, 75, were at their house at Kwangwanya area, Paulpietersburg when they were attacked by the accused," said Zwane.

"They were assaulted and stabbed with a sharp instrument. Both victims died at the scene and the motive of their killing was unknown."

Vezi and Hlatswayo stole the couple's jewellery before fleeing the scene.

They were arrested shortly after the crime.
