Johannesburg - Two men were sentenced to 23 years and 15 years respectively for the rape and murder of Tracey-Lee Martins by the South Gauteng High Court sitting in Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court, The Star reported on Friday.

Kyle Fredericks, 21, was sentenced to 23 years for raping, robbing and killing Martins.

His accomplice Shinawaaz Ahmento, 21, received 15 years for raping Martins as well as robbing and assaulting her grandmother, the newspaper reported.

During sentencing, acting Judge Louis Vorster said the two were led astray by drugs.

"You went with the intention to rob Martins, but things went wrong as she recognised you and called your name," Vorster told Fredericks.

"She died a gruesome death and you showed no remorse. You were still young and you were a victim of drug abuse."

Vorster found Ahmento had shown remorse by making a confession to the police and also gave more details during his testimony, the publication reported.

Fredericks and Ahmento broke into Martins's home in April last year with the intention of stealing her handbag.

They had just finished smoking crystal meth and wanted to buy more, the newspaper reported.

Both raped Martins and Fredericks strangled her. Ahmento went to Martins's grandmother's room and robbed and assaulted her.

Martins's son, who was 3-years-old at the time, witnessed the attack on his mother.

According to The Star, Martins's uncle expressed disbelief that the pair did not get life sentences, saying his niece did not get justice.
