Bloemfontein - Double life sentences were handed down to two men on Thursday for murdering a Free State farmer and his wife, police said.

Police spokesperson Peter Kareli said Oupa Mokoena, 47, and Ezekiele Mguni, 30, were sentenced in the Parys Circuit Court to a further 18 years each on robbery-related charges.

On Wednesday, the court found the two men guilty of the murders of Ernest van Rooyen, 77, and his wife Annetjie, 76, of the farm Somerset, in January 2013.

A third accused in the matter, Mmaditaba Mokoena, 46, was acquitted.

Van Rooyen and his wife were found dead in their tuck shop, which they ran from their garage on the farm.

The farmer died of shock due to blood loss after being stabbed.

His wife suffocated after she was tied up and gagged, and put into a chest freezer while still alive.

The two men packed some frozen meat packets on top of her.
