Johannesburg - Two men accused of stripping a woman of her pants were sentenced in the Umlazi Regional Court on Friday, the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE) said.
Spokesperson Javu Baloyi said Thulani Cosmos Cele was sentenced to four years and his co-accused Sibusiso Cele was sentenced to a year.
The two stripped Zandile Mpanza's pants in Umlazi, claiming that no woman should wear pants in Umalzi's T-section.
"The sentence meted out to the accused is indeed effective and strikes a balance between the interests of society and that of the accused, which is appropriate in the circumstances," he said.
" Ms Mpanza has welcomed the guilty verdict of the Umlazi Regional Court in December 2010 as well as the sentencing of the accused today (Friday), stating that she now feels that she can get on with her life."
He said the sentencing and incarceration of the accused had sent a clear deterrent message that injustice against women in society would not be tolerated.
