Parabat killed in jump accident

2012-02-14 21:48

Bloemfontein - A soldier at the Tempe Military Base in Bloemfontein was killed during a training exercise on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

Captain Chaka Marope said the soldier deployed his parachute after he jumped out of an air force plane, but collided with another parachuting soldier during his descent.

"He fell in the Groenvlei area. The post mortem will determine whether he broke his neck during the collision or during the fall," he said.

"The other soldier managed to get control of his parachute and land it, but he broke his leg."

The cause of the accident was still being investigated, he said.

Why didn't anyone inform gravity about this affirmative action thing we have going on.

      Jan - 2012-02-14 22:52

Max, you're sick. Get some help.

Training accidents do happen and when they do and a soldier loses his life, it is very sad. My condolences to the family.

      John - 2012-02-15 00:40

My condolences to the family also. Jan, question is how those accidents are prevented. Someone miscalculated this training event. If that was a free flow parachute descent.....we know whose fault is it. Don't we?

This happens every year! These paratroopers die because of the stupid pampoen parachutes they use. How many more paratrooper deaths do we have to read about before the army changes the damn parachutes?

      DraganTrenk - 2012-02-15 00:58

That parachutes are as good as the Condoms that Government supply! I wouldn't jump with anything that some moron(well connected) buys in Fong Kong, period.

      Henri James Christie - 2012-02-15 07:56

Please confirm the number of deaths through "pampoen" parachutes!!

      John - 2012-02-15 10:23

Duncan, The best parachute worths f*all if the instructor(s) aka "safety officer" misjudges how "quick" parabats must exit aircraft. I bet that you don't know what "relative wind" is, but you know what pampoen is. A collision with another canopy can be avoided by observing simple principles. This is not fault of parachute rigger(s). Stop blaiming parachutes.
