White River - The parents of a 12-year-old girl were shocked when they were called to identify her body early on Sunday morning as they thought she was sleeping safely in a her room.
A passer by found Carol Masango's naked body under a bridge in Bhuga, near White River at about 06:00 and alerted the police.
She was found naked and appeared to have been strangled, bashed on the head with a rock and then drowned, said KaBokweni police spokesperson Constable Muzi Ngomane on Tuesday.
"We found one used condom and an open packet of unused condoms when we arrived on the scene," said Ngomane.
The passer by had recognised the child, who was in Grade 7 at Maphakama primary school, and police called her parents.
Ngomane said her parents were shocked when they were called to identify her body as they thought she was asleep in her room.
Her mother told police that she had spent time with her daughter on Saturday night before they went to sleep in their separate rooms.
Police have no suspects as yet and have opened a murder and rape case.
Anyone who may have information regarding the crime is asked to call Detective Constable Duma on 082 303 9763.
