Cape Town - From the start of 2016, parents will have only 30 days to register their newborns or risk their child not being recognised as a citizen, it was reported on Wednesday.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba announced that his department intends ending all late registration of births by the end of December 2015.

Parents will have 30 days from the birth of the baby to register them, the Times reported Gigaba as saying.

Should parents miss the deadline, unregistered children will be unable to obtain vital documents such as birth certificates and identity documents, which are needed to access public services.

NGOs working with children welcomed the announcement but warned that government will have to do a thorough awareness campaign.
