Durban - Two men were arrested on Tuesday night during a carefully orchestrated police swoop in connection with the murder of a Chatsworth man in a hijacking last month.

The two had been out on parole at the time of the murder.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said that the men, both 40-years-old, were located in Lamontville in the south Durban basin following an “intensive investigation”.

“During the take down, one of the suspects was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with five live rounds of ammunition,” he said.

Naicker said that their alleged victim, Ranchod Jugdesh Dayaram, 58, was at a service station in Mobeni Heights on June 26 when he was attacked by the two. He was shot and killed after he was hauled out of his car.

“The suspects then fled the scene with the deceased’s vehicle. A case of murder and armed robbery was opened at Bayview SAPS.”

Naicker added that on the same day, a witness to the murder had been shot at by the men while travelling in Lamontville.

“They will appear in the Chatsworth Magistrate's Court on Friday facing charges of murder, armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition as well as intimidation.

"Detectives have established, thus far, that the two suspects are currently out on parole for robbery and theft charges,” he said.
