Parrots frightens robbers away

2012-07-18 10:12

Johannesburg - A Kempton Park woman is convinced her parrot's "hello" - normally in a deep, man's voice - scared three intruders from her home, Beeld reported on Wednesday.

The woman, who did not want to be named, and her son woke up one morning last week in their Johannesburg home after three men had broken in through the sliding door in the lounge.

She and her son locked themselves in the bathroom.

"...Suddenly we just heard three gunshots and then there was silence," she said.

She and her son came out of the bathroom and called the police.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Cobus Halloway said: "There was a bullet in the wall, another in the ceiling and another in the opposite direction, through the curtain...

"The DVD player and TV were lying near the door. You could see that these men got out of there pretty fast."

The woman said only then did she realise what had probably happened.

"We throw a blanket over our parrot every evening. He sits near the sliding door where they had broken in.

"I suspect that when he heard the intruders, he greeted them in the dark with his usual 'hello'. He says it in this deep, heavy, man's voice.

"They must have thought this is the devil standing next to them, fired a few shots into the dark and then got out of the house very quickly."

Excellent, those African Grey's are soooo clever. Mine is like a baby in the house. Very good talkers so I can imagine that happening.

My AG (Jacob) is a guard-parrot. He allows my cat to walk into the kitchen, but when other cats try to enter he shouts some bloodcurdling, very loud scream -and they run! The sound makes even me uncomfortable.

Apparently African Grey Parrots cost in Jhb varies widely - from R99 to R600 on Gumtree, then add food and Vets - Security company from R250 per month up......Nice work Polly!

You must be joking. Unless it's some wild (not hand-reared), disease ridden bird. 2500 to 3500 for an adult, hand-reared good talker, is more like it.

The parrot said Jesus is watching you. Robber just laughed until the pet Rotweiler growled and the robber was herd to remark "Oh Jesus!" as he ran through the closed plate glass door.

I thought of the exact same joke. Lol.

      bakers.dozen.14 - 2012-07-18 11:15

Once upon a morning in Kempton Park there were two pets in a house, one named Didie and the other Jesus. the rest is history.

Looks like we all need to invest in African Greys, and get rid of our security walls...it's a lot cheaper. Well done POLLY :) lol
