Passengers flung out of overturning bus

2011-03-18 08:13

Johannesburg - The death toll of a bus accident on the R501 in Doorfontein on Friday morning has risen to eight, Gauteng paramedics said.

"One of the critically injured bus passengers died shortly after his arrival at hospital bringing the total death toll to eight," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

He said 27 others were injured, six critically, when the bus they were travelling in veered off the road and overturned.

Several passengers were flung out on impact.

"The injured and the dead were found by medics scattered about the wreckage which had eventually ground to a halt nearly fifty metres from the road," said Wicks.

The injured were taken to various hospitals.

The cause of the accident was not known.

Where's Doorfontein? I don't know this place, is it meant to be Doornfontein? Class of 2010 strikes again!

According to the bus driver - the brakes failed and he tried to change down and couldn't take any gears and was on a downhill and there's a curve at the end. The bus was transporting employees to work

Surely as a professional driver once you realize that something is not right in your vehicle while on downhill, why do you wait until the disaster. Sure there are dongas/walls on the roadside. You would at least swave straight to the wall before the vehicle pick up the speed and get into the curve. Zonda let us be realistic - this driver was speeding. When did he realized that there was a brake failure? Surely the road signes clearly tells you to slow down in time and that is when you start checking your gears, brakes ect.

@Grant Doornfontein is in JHB...know you country

      Grant - 2011-03-18 11:54

I know Doornfontein - I don't know Doorfontein. Was being sarcastic - hadn't had my coffee yet! Possibly not my greatest moment. However your reading and comprehension (not to mention grammar)skills indicate that you may be from the class of 2010 as well as the reporter!
