East London - A pastor of the Nazareth Church in Libode, near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape, is on the run following the murder of a 5-year-old child, police said on Friday.

"We have received information that he is in Johannesburg," spokesperson Warrant Officer Dineo Koena said.

The 40-year-old pastor allegedly stabbed the child with a spear in the head during a church service in April. He has been on the run since.

"The pastor fled the scene of the crime but we are looking for him."

Koena said it was unknown what led to the attack on the child but police were hopeful to get answers once the man had been arrested.
