Patient who was raped in hospital dies

2011-11-21 12:18

Bloemfontein - A terminally ill cancer patient who was raped at a government hospital has died, Free State police said on Monday.

"She died in hospital on Friday," said Lieutenant Colonel Annelie Wrensch.

Magda Lombard, 51, had been transferred by her family to a private hospital after she was raped at the National Hospital in Bloemfontein on October 15.

A male nurse allegedly raped her while his female colleague held her down.

The male nurse, 31, was granted bail of R500 by the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court earlier this month, and would appear in court again on December 1.

Lombard could not identify her alleged rapist's female accomplice.

Wrensch said it was hoped that the results of DNA tests would be available before the man's next court appearance.

This just shows what some people are capable of. Out on R1000 bail???? What the hell is going here??

      barry.mcbride - 2011-11-21 19:23

      Where did you see R1000?

  • PilgrimX - 2011-11-21 12:39

Articles like this bring thoughts to my mind that I never knew I had. It makes me want to do terrible things to this nurse, painfully and very slowly.

  • Kay - 2011-11-21 12:40

RIP. i cant read stories on news24 anymore i get so angry, surprised we all havent started killing each other, yet. Hope that lady is at peace and haunts the shi.t outa that as$hole who violated her whole being.

  • Marion - 2011-11-21 12:43

RIP Magda. Wish you hadn't had to die with that terrible experience on your mind on top of the pain and suffering associated with your terminal cancer. Hopefully both these nurses will go to jail for a long time and never again be allowed to practice medicine.

  • Washington - 2011-11-21 12:43

Death sentence is the only solution.Such no do gooders should not only be incarcerated but commandeered to the noose. The laws must be changed in RSA to bring back the death sentence never mind how unpopular that punitive measure is world wide -it's a requirement in a country which is regarded as the most dangerous outside a war zone.

  • Francois - 2011-11-21 12:45

    Sicko!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • kritzinger - 2011-11-21 12:48

Surely there is something wrong with a magistrate who can grant bail to such a bottom-feeding lifeform? The guy is an animal, he deserves the needle/chair/noose.

  • Cina - 2011-11-21 12:53

There goes another rapist free, now nothing will happen to him, the victim is dead. My condolences to her husband and family.

      Heibrin - 2011-11-22 01:06

The guy should be charged with manslaughter, not rape!!

  • Shirley - 2011-11-21 13:13

R.I.P. Its a sad day when you are struggeling against a terminal illness and a THING-not human can do this! Then he gets let out on bail???? Lock him in a cage with fire ants for a week and then jail him for life. My deepest sympathies to the family.

      Jeff - 2011-11-21 16:29

The magistrate is an AA appointee. That's what comes from 'transforming' the judiciary.

      Kala - 2011-11-21 18:02

Jeff would that be an Alcoholics Anonymous appointment. Because that I could believe.

  • Cameronl - 2011-11-21 13:15

BAIL for R1000.00 you have got to be f-ing kidding me!!!!!!! This son of a bitch deserves to rot in jail for the rest of his life getting exactly what he gave to poor woman. I cant believe they granted him bail for peanuts!!!

  • tony.calitz - 2011-11-21 13:16

Disgusting - jail the scum for life AND his slut of an accomplice! Shows that hospitals are NOT checking their staff thoroughly. These are institutions where sick people go. Sick people should NOT be working there!

  • Andrea - 2011-11-21 13:20

Last week I saw an article of a man that drove his bike more than 200km/h in a 120km/h zone and got R44 000 bail! This excuse-for-a-man rapes a woman and gets R1000 bail...go figure!

      Shirley - 2011-11-21 13:31

The wonders of south africas justice system!!!

      PilgrimX - 2011-11-21 13:31

This is confusing me too. The justice system is a total failure and a slap to the intelligence and moral values of the average citizen.

      Squeegee - 2011-11-21 13:44

Andrea - there is a difference between bail and a fine. The motorist was fined R44 000. That is his punishment. This rapist still has to be punished. Pity we don't have the death penalty anymore - he is a suitable candidate.

      modmario - 2011-11-23 09:00

      because the biker is white...

  • Penny - 2011-11-21 13:30

Who is the bigger criminal.. the one who did the raping, or the one who let him out on R1000-00 bail???

  • Mandy - 2011-11-21 13:33

What is wrong with our justice system. R1000 bail for raping a dying woman???? That's disgusting. The pig should receive life - without a willy!

  • j.c.s.mailbox - 2011-11-21 13:33

How worse can things get in the government running hospitals?? Getting bail and case postponed to 1st dec. Getting bail and case postponed to 5th January, getting bail and case postponed to 5th Febr. etc. etc. The next thing that will happened in the government running hospitals is some murder cases of patients that cant be cure or maybe if there is not enough beds available. Poor citizens who hasnt got medical aid funds. All governtment running hospitals must change the name hospital to Chamber of Horrors. So it happened actually in the Bloemfontein Chamber of Horrors.

  • Tony - 2011-11-21 13:46

1000.00 bail for rape is a insult to ones intelligence. One wonders about the race of the rapist but the white motorcyclist gets 44000.00 for doing 200km p/h. I try not to see it as a race issue but its difficult when faced with reality. The same with the taxi troll that ran over the white lawyer lady, just 500.00 bail.

  • bradley.bennell - 2011-11-21 13:59

Pigs! wait.. even an animal wouldn't do something that sick!

  • ivan.coetzee2 - 2011-11-21 14:04

The rapist, that bitch who assisted him and the Matron and administrators at the time are all complicit and should get the harshest possible punnishment. They are despicable. Come on SAPS & Judicial System, do the right thing. Bubba is waiting for you, you bloody rapist! R.I.P Magda Lombard

  • Ditantane - 2011-11-21 14:08

some people just don't belong in our society, i bet the idiot is even half the age of the victin, MAY GOD BE WITH HER FAMILY. as for the two idiot, i come to think about it if they can work together on this case they might have did it before to other patiants. morons...

  • sha.dreyer - 2011-11-21 14:09

R500!!!! Is that all the bail?? That is so wrong!!

  • Isabel - 2011-11-21 14:12

It is time to bring back the death penalty, the bail amount can be R1mil its not going to solve the problem, we have to get rid of these animals they are not fit to be on earth, please set an example and bring back the death sentence for raping woman and children, the quicker the better for South Africa, and the world. How can we do it!

      Bianca - 2011-11-25 09:29

The conviction rate for reported crime is about 6%. Exactly how will the death penalty help? What we need is people to demand swift sure arrest and convictions and stop with the quick fix can't work solutions.

  • Mugwanti - 2011-11-21 14:29

so sad..hope justice will prevail in this case for the deceased sake.

  • Liz - 2011-11-21 14:43

why oh why don't they reopen robben island again and put all these low lifes there! they can grow vegetables and stuff, then look after themselves away from normal humans. i think they would land up killing each other trying to be the main man.

  • lhenama - 2011-11-21 15:02

Sies marn how sick is that & that obviously means that its not the first time that they were doing it. The female nurse, how can she be that cruel to another woman, I don't know what this world is coming to.

  • Sharon - 2011-11-21 15:09

It is only a extremely 'sick' government who's law's can allow this.

  • gaeleen - 2011-11-21 15:11

WHat a disgrace - they cannot allow him to continue nursing - he has gone against all ethical and moral rules - they should cut his ...... off and then lock him up in the psycho ward

  • Jason - 2011-11-21 15:23

R500.00 Bail, facking great Justice System we have here!!

  • Lizl - 2011-11-21 15:41

Call me blind....where do they mention R1000 bail? All I can see is R500, which makes it even worse...

  • Cherylin - 2011-11-21 15:45

R500 bail- what an injustice and disgrace- the justice system should be ashamed....dispicable behaviour- I am ashamed that we call this beast human

  • desire.harsant - 2011-11-21 15:57

I agree with you there fully Theresa

  • Michelle - 2011-11-21 16:05

I am browned off about this issue

  • annelie.roux1 - 2011-11-21 16:50

You are just nowhere safe in South Africa. This poor woman is lying helpless in hospital, and another nurse helped by pushing this woman down! It realy is time for change in Government, it just cannot go on like this anymore.

  • Bitter - 2011-11-21 16:56

The anc members voted for a rapist as their president....what do everyone expect? its rather "normal" wouldnt u agree?

  • Monti - 2011-11-21 17:14

    Zuma your country stinks

  • Homemissionary - 2011-11-21 17:37

Bail? The magistrate should also be sentenced!

  • Colin - 2011-11-21 17:38

BRING BACK THE DEATH PENALTY NOW.

  • Nitesh - 2011-11-21 17:43

what about the biaatch that held her down????????

  • Naledi - 2011-11-21 17:57

I dont know about this country any more...........we need some form of military revolution!

  • Cheryl - 2011-11-21 17:57

Classy fellow south africans, classy......... This kind of evil has nothing to do with poverty . We need special stricter laws such as the death penalty and castration for this in this country....because we have some especially truly sick citizens in this country..... snip snip

  • braamc - 2011-11-21 18:11

Savages. I hope the two vrek, not even animals behave like that.

  • Robsschele - 2011-11-21 20:12

To call these bastards animals is doing injustice to the animals. There should be a clause whereby you can declare these things as nonhuman and deny them of all human rights. I just hope they go to jail and get fixed up in jail. Let us please follow their life or lack of it in jail. Hope hey get tortured before being killed. I feel like putting a R1000 on for the person that do it. Anyone for more R1000s. Let's put some money on their heads.

  • aterblanche3 - 2011-11-21 20:41

  • Trudy - 2011-11-21 20:44

  • marina.poniatowska - 2011-11-21 21:36

    Shocking.

  • Bongwa - 2011-11-21 22:51

LORD have mercy, how can such thing happen? It's really disgusting. I think if that male nurse did that will never enter the kingdom of GORD unless he repents and pray for forgiveness.

  • Cristina - 2011-11-22 05:52

Freaking sick bastards!!!...how can you hold down a sick person and let your male colleague rape her!!..imagine if that were your child, sister, mother..Sick piece of work both of them, may they rot in prison!!!!!!!

  • Wally - 2011-11-22 05:55

I also cldnt believe my eyes @ first when reading about the incident and the bail. However, plz b rational in commenting. Rape falls within a category of the Crim Proc Act where a spec process is to b followed and the Jud Off b convinced - to b less formalistic in my approach - of certain issues. The bail will not only suit the crime but also the circumstances. As Jud Off he/she has the info produced by the diff parties and whatever evd is prod'd @ the bail hearing. Although bail is meant to secure att @ court it is also security to comply with spec conditions that may b set & 2 protect diff interests. The way the article is written, as is unfortunately many times the case in all media, creates the impression that the Jud Off had sum sinistere motive, has no feelings or brains or did not do his/her job. One cannot judge w/out the facts. Same applies to the accused/suspect. Not yet convicted. We rush 2 conclusions. I detest anything that purports to b a rapist or accomplice, but my feelings must never over-shadow my rational thinking. I take my hat of to Thozi for the manner in which sum issues are raised, and the polite manner of reply. Perhaps as commentators we shld attempt to treat each other with respect and show sum dignity than to b name-calling and so extremely judgmental. There is a time & place 4 everything. When it deserves sum scolding, u hv the choice to respond. Just remember, as u hv the right 2 comment, so does anyone else. Stay focussed.

      cphilander - 2011-11-23 12:36

Hey Wally. Nice comment i agree. I just want to mention that as we are commenting and replying another person/human is being raped it has now become common in SA and i totally understand everones anger and frustration @ this stage. You place urself in that persons position and think what if it happened to me or sum1 very dear to me i think that it hits the wrong nurve and in that moment you say out loud what you are unable to do. Just saying. Thnx Wally

  • Adre - 2011-11-22 06:34

The state should stop all bail on rape cases and put them in the deepest and worst hole in the prisons, they are not human, they are beasts and they do not deserve to breath!
