Johannesburg - An inquest docket has yet to be opened after a pensioner died, reportedly from inhaling pepper spray in Thohoyandou, Limpopo police said on Thursday.

Alpheus Moseri, 68, of Matatadibeng village near Denilton, died on Tuesday afternoon on his way back from the Nelson Mandela memorial lecture presented by President Jacob Zuma in Thohoyandou.

"An inquest docket has not been opened yet as there are no suspicions of wrongdoing so far. We will open a docket if information that requires further investigation surfaces," police spokesperson Constable Lethunya Mmuroa said.

Moseri was part of an audience that gathered to listen to Zuma's lecture. Police used pepper spray when a section of the crowd became unruly.

Moseri was travelling back home in a bus later that day when he began coughing. An ambulance was called and he was taken to Tsimanyana hospital, where he died just before 17:00.

"We also await post mortem results that will tell us whether an investigation is necessary or not," Mmuroa said.

Moseri was an ANC branch executive member in ward six, Ditholong.

No inquest or investigation , it would reflect badly on Zuma. Just sweep in under the carpet with the arms deal , rape and other corruption issues surrounding the mighty dictator.

people are dying at so called noble gatherings. it's not a good sign for JZ at all. Enkandla awaits him. The same way he got into power is the same way he is gonna get out. The MK even had teargas at such a gathering.nahh it's a crying shame.

"Police used pepper spray when a section of the crowd became unruly. " If you learn how to behave... you wont have this problem...

It is a shame. I suppose, they wont worry about him, he is a pensioner and like all old folks we are not worth anything to this government. He went there to show support he came home in a coffin.

-The cause of death will with virtual certainty be: inhalation of pepper spray. -The stuff can easily cause localised anaphylactic reactions, and if much inhaled into one's bronchi, one does not even to have asthma to get severe bronchial spasms and thus die of suffocation. -Pepper spray is a weapon -albeit mostly used as a defensive weapon. Now one of the lamest police forces on the planet says: "An inquest docket has not been opened yet as there are no suspicions of wrongdoing so far"! So if a weapon is used with direct, lethal consequences, it's not MURDER, not even wrongdoing, just to please that despicable toad and his crowd? SCANDALOUS!
