Malalane - A chronically ill 71-year-old Mpumalanga pensioner was found guilty on Wednesday of twice raping his 11-year-old granddaughter.

The accused, from Middelplaas near the Swazi and Mozambican border, was found guilty on two counts of rape by the Boschfontein Regional Court.

He raped his granddaughter in 2010 and 2011 when she was 11 and 12 years old, a News24 correspondent reported.

Passing judgment, Magistrate Edgar Moletsane told the court he was happy with the testimonies from the victim and all three witnesses - the victim's mother, grandmother, and a local pastor.

"I find you guilty as charged because your testimony was based on lies," Moletsane said.

Previously, the victim testified that her grandfather first raped her in 2010, when she was doing Grade 5.

"Mkhulu [grandfather] pulled out his penis and penetrated me and then ordered me to keep quiet or else he was going to beat me up," the victim testified on camera.

Moletsane postponed the case to Thursday for sentencing.

"I will forfeit your bail money and you must come to Tonga Regional Court for your sentencing," said Moletsane.

The accused was out on R1 000 bail.
