Johannesburg - Police have launched a manhunt for a group of nine suspects who are believed to have shot and killed a 65-year-old man.

The group apparently tried to rob the man of his wallet before fleeing the scene of another robbery on Thursday in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said.

"It is alleged that this afternoon a group of about nine suspects, some were armed, stormed into a liquor outlet," police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said.

They pushed the security guard inside and robbed the shop of an undisclosed amount of money, alcohol and cigarettes.

"As they fled the scene, they met with a 65-year-old man whom they wanted to rob of his wallet.

"He resisted and the suspects fatally wounded him," she said.

The group fled the scene in a Golf GTI and a white Ford Ranger.
