People, animals rescued from KZN fire

2012-02-02 08:02
Durban - Twelve people were injured and five animals were rescued following a factory fire in Tongaat in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday, emergency workers said.

The fire broke out at 15:00 in a polystyrene factory, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha.

"Paramedics and the fire services arrived at the scene to find the building in flames," he said.

Medics treated 12 people for smoke inhalation.

A firemen and a paramedic were alerted to animals trapped in an alley next to the burning building.

"The enormous heat from the fire had melted the guttering on the block of flats and made the rescue of the two dogs and three cats difficult," Botha said.

Nevertheless the emergency workers were able to free the animals.

We have been taught that we need three meals a day in order to make it through the day and while most of us indulge in more than our fair share there is a large portion of South Africans who are living off barely enough to sustain them.
