Cape Town - A person died when a fire swept through an informal settlement in Philippi on Tuesday morning, Cape Town Fire and Rescue said.

The gender and identity of the person could not be established because of the extent of the burns, spokesperson Theo Layne said.

Around 60 people were displaced in the fire at Marcus Garvey settlement around 01:30.

At least 20 wood and iron structures were destroyed.

Layne said it took 30 firefighters two hours to extinguish the blaze.
