2011-12-17 22:18

Johannesburg - A man crossing a Durban highway was killed after being hit by a petrol tanker, paramedics said on Saturday.

"The man misjudged the speed of the truck and ran into its path," said Netcare 911's Jeffrey Wicks.

He said the tanker struck the man and then rode over his body.

The truck driver was unhurt.

In a separate incident, thirteen people were injured when a car and two minibuses collided on the N2 near the Wansbeck Bridge in Sydenham.

The injured were stabilised on the scene before being taken to various hospitals.

It is safer on the streets of Syria than on SAcan roads...

Wrong! Who in their right mind tries to cross a highway (which is illegal anyway) during heavy holiday traffic. I was on that road yesterday and the traffic was intense to say the least. Last Saturday a similar incident occurred when two people had an encounter with a low-loader vehicle. Also trying to cross a busy highway, the low-loader won. Man's stupidity knows no bounds!

So pleased that the "truck driver was unhurt."

It's illegal to cross a highway. A life could have been saved by simply obeying the law.

What law? I didn't know there were any laws in this country. Every day I see someone doing something so extremely stupid, and I think, somewhere in the world, that must be illegal. The law only applies when it is enforced.

These idiot pedestrians keep on endangering people's lives. Seems like they and the useless law enforcers will never listen.

    Epic Fail

People crossing roads or highways that is extremely busy is just stupid. A year ago I saw an accident where a person ran in front of the traffic to reach his buddy's on the other side of the road. He was hit by the vehicle with a trailer. The bakkie and the trailer jackknifed and crashed into the car next to it. The vehicles that was traveling behind them ten crashed into them. By the end of the day there was 5 vehicles in the accident and the guys next to the road was also hurt because the last vehicle drives over them trying to avoid the accident. In total there was 6 pedestrians and 7 people in the cars that was hurt very seriously. One stupid persons mistake. The strangest thing was that just a hundred meters behind the accident there was a pedestrian bridge going over the road.

I think it is South African's general disregard and also ignorance and laziness which leads to so much carnage no the roads every day. It is also the reason we have so much crime because there is inadequate punishment for small offences which then leads people to believe they can get away with larger crimes.. I guess in the greater scheme of things the world has too many poor stupid or careless people on it and they are taking themselves out of the genepool which isn't altogether a bad thing. What's bad is the number of innocents who they take with them.

its becoming the norm these days to see poeple running and walking across the highway.....it seems these morons believe the cars must stop while they have right of way...
