Pippie smiles again

2012-10-10 10:08

Three-year-old Pippie Kruger is recovering well at home after she was severely burned when a firelighter exploded in her father's hands on New Years Day. Watch.WATCH

Johannesburg - Little Isabella “Pippie” Kruger is doing incredibly well but her mother fears the anniversary of the tragic incident, which is coming up at the end of December.

Anice Kruger told the Independent on Saturday how Pippie, 3, was now able to sit by herself, how her hair was growing “by the metre”, taking root on cloned skin, much to the surprise of doctors.

The little girl woke up and went to bed each day with a big smile.

“There’s not a care in the world. She went from terrible twos to sweet 16, nothing in between,” said her proud mother.

Pippie underwent groundbreaking surgery in June when cloned skin was transplanted onto her body. She has survived five heart attacks, kidney failure, pneumonia and over 45 operations.

But mom Anice said she wasn’t ready to face 31 December, when it will be one year since the firelighter exploded in her husband’s hands, resulting in third-degree burns over most of Pippie’s body.

“I took December 31 and January 1 out of my calendar. I’m taking a sleeping pill. They can wake me up on January 2. My mom will babysit the kids. I know nothing bad is going to happen.”

Kruger said she just wasn’t strong enough to face that day again.
