Johannesburg - Potentially valuable data on Oscar Pistorius's iPhone has yet to be decoded, just three weeks before his murder trial is due to start.

According to Beeld, a source close to the investigation confirmed that the State will go ahead with the trial without the evidence from his phone.

While it would be a bonus if the police were able to decode the data on the phone, this information is not considered as vital evidence as the State has "good prima facie" evidence against Pistorius, the source said.

Pistorius will go on trial in the North Gauteng High Court on 3 March for the murder of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on 14 February last year.

According to the source, the State needs assistance from Apple in the US to access encrypted data on the phone as Pistorius said he had forgotten Apple ID details.

However, the bureaucratic process involving the US Federal Investigations Bureau (FBI) has delayed this. A request was issued last year, but a court order needs to be obtained in the US and investigators must travel to the country as part of the process.

Eyewitness News reported that investigators took three phones from the crime scene, and have been unable to analyse the message history and data from messaging applications on an iPhone 5.

Investigators are waiting for the green light from the FBI before they can travel to the US, according to EWN.

The FBI is believed to have obtained a preservation order on the data.
