Plan for free 90-day Zim permit

Cape Town - Cabinet will soon be presented with plans on how to implement a decision to grant Zimbabweans free 90-day permits to seek casual work in South Africa, Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said on Friday.

The measure was announced by her predecessor in May, but at the time there was no clear plan for rolling it out, Dlamini-Zuma said.

"I will be taking it to Cabinet soon," she said.

Dlamini Zuma said she hoped the special visitor's permit would help to ease the wave of asylum applications from Zimbabweans who are actually economic refugees.

South Africa also scrapped visa requirements for Zimbabweans in May, three months after the crisis-ridden country's political rivals formed a unity government.
