Platinum, diamonds, cash - global syndicate cracked

2011-09-27 22:29

Johannesburg - The Hawks arrested members of a platinum syndicate on Tuesday after confiscating platinum concentrate worth R50m, an official said.

"The Hawks raided several locations around Gauteng," said spokesperson McIntosh Polela.

"They arrested an alleged syndicate kingpin in Fairland. Another arrest was made in Brakpan where R125 000 in cash was also found.

"Our members also raided a refinery in Babelegi near Hamanskraal and arrested three people who run the refinery... It's here that we found platinum concentrate valued at R50m. "

At the refinery, 15 uncut diamonds were also found.

Polela said the platinum was stolen from mines and then sent to the refinery, before being exported to Italy, the UK, Switzerland and Canada for more refining.

"Syndicate members have offshore accounts in which their money is paid. We have already traced an account in Panama," said Polela.

This is great news, now let the system back them up and put the whole bunch in jail, no matter what party or who they are. Don't let this good work be lost because somebody is in the government or high up in any political party. Give them a case of Bells they deserve it. Viva Hawks

      czovczov - 2011-09-27 22:55

      Met - 2011-09-28 05:45

The old NUM were masters at this game- also gold.Much of the ANCs initial funding came this way. The practise has just continued and the "boeremafia" and other crime syndicates, have joined the "party"

      York Hunt - 2011-09-28 07:22

      @Vuzi. Very funny indeed!

  • Roger 01 - 2011-09-28 03:28

What's platinum concentrate? Just add water to get platinum.

      AMS-Dammer - 2011-09-28 03:37

      2:1 Ratio....... LOL!!!

      Tony - 2011-09-28 07:21

Interesting question that - "platinum concentrate" running at, let's say, 150g/t Pt & with the current platinum price of R390/g, you're looking at a contained metal value of R59 000/ton (excluding credits for the other PGMs). That makes something like 850t concentrate to get to a total of R50M. Where'd they hide it ? In the mens' toilet? Maybe we mean matte.

      Ross - 2011-09-28 07:40

@Tony. Non mining folks won't understand your explanation. I suspect the reporters have kept it simple albeit incorrect.

      HadEnuf - 2011-09-28 08:11

Could be BMR residue ? That runs a lot higher grade than matte ?

      Ingie - 2011-09-28 08:42

@Tony- I would like to know why someone gave you a thumbs down.....think could be sjanga or moron not understanding your explanation.

      Tony - 2011-09-28 16:53

@ Ross, Ingie julle - that's their problem Bru. Maybe they should make an effort to understand, like I do with ahhh, religion of classical music, hey.

  • Bluffbandit - 2011-09-28 05:01

Well done Hawks. We just hope that the case does not take years to investigate and that when found guilty all those involved, including the overseas people, are punished with everything the law can throw at them. These crooks deserve nothing less

  • Hangmann - 2011-09-28 06:53

Crooks not only in SA, some respectable European countries mentioned above.

  • Ross - 2011-09-28 07:38

      Swart_Baas - 2011-09-28 08:25

they get the bribes first. trhe dudes must have forgotten to pay the police on time.

  • NJE - 2011-09-28 08:10

@johnwilliam.roberts If u don't have anything to say shut up. Keep it up Hawks..Let the money subsidies the universities

      Enigma - 2011-09-28 08:36

Subsidise universities for what? Free over the counter condoms for your kids who always go on strike for no reason. There are too many people without houses, no proper health facilities and unemployed, now that's where the money should go to.

      AMS-Dammer - 2011-09-28 08:38

subsidies????? Maybe the school you went to needs to be SUBSIDISED, coz you FAIL!!!

  • LeslieS - 2011-09-28 08:25

The S.A. mining industry loses billions annually due to theft from illegal mining and processing plants. These illegal operations must be closed down,as the small fry are normally caught while the fat cats sit back and think out other strategies. These loses in revenue could have created employment, and taxes to SARS that could help our ailing economy.

  • Ingie - 2011-09-28 08:45

Well done, good job!!!....wonder if Zuma is now worrying that the Hawks are coming up with all the crooks and doing their job properly, seeing that he got rid of the this space soon the Hawks will be fired

  • Dayat Atime - 2011-09-28 09:32

Just a piece of the result of a long term plan. Deteriorate the country to a state of apathy with weak borders, then move in international smuggling rings to begin the removal of the minerals they so desperately crave. We didn't need the rest of the world once, nor care what they thought, and we need to get back to that stage before they rape us dry.

  • Pippa Williams - 2011-09-28 12:30

Thou shall not steal from the poor miners who work so hard to get the minnerals out of the ground. Thou shall not steal from loyal emloyees who only work for an honest salary and can't wait for a production bonus. Thou shall not steal from Management who try their best to mannage corrupt workers and unions. Thou shall be punished
