Thobani Ngqulunga, The Witness

Pietermaritzburg - A robber who was shot in a struggle with a plucky woman who fought against him - fearing he might harm her frail husband - has been traced by detectives to a hospital.

This after a farm attack at Karkloof in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

It is alleged that the 63-year-old woman was awoken by the bright light of a torch shining in her eyes.

Howick police spokesperson Captain Lolly Moodley said the incident happened shortly after midnight.

“Upon waking up, the woman saw three men, one armed with a firearm,” he said.

The men demanded cash and firearms. Moodley said she did not have firearms but she gave them an undisclosed amount of cash.

Shot went off

“They then dragged her through the house and when she realised that she was being dragged to a room where her frail husband was sleeping, she put up a struggle to stop the suspects going to it,” he said.

During the struggle, a gun shot went off. The woman sustained a graze wound on her right temple and the suspect was shot through his hand.

Moodley said it was unclear exactly how this happened.

“A case of house robbery and attempted murder was opened at Howick police station,” he said.

He said police later received information that the suspect was at the East Street Clinic in Pietermaritzburg, but when they got there he must have realised that police were on his trail because he fled the area just before police arrived.

“The detectives continued their search throughout hospitals in Pietermaritzburg and eventually arrested the suspect in one of the hospitals,” said Moodley.

He said suspect was in hospital under police guard and police were hunting for the other two suspects.
