Johannesburg - A total of 524 people have been arrested in Soweto for various crimes, including hijacking, rape, and fraud, Gauteng police said on Friday.

Four people were arrested in Diepkloof for allegedly hijacking delivery trucks in the area on Thursday, Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said. Three unlicensed firearms were recovered.

Other arrests were for crimes such as possession of drugs, fraud, armed robbery, rape, and dealing in liquor without a licence. The arrests, which took place on Thursday, were part of a crime-fighting operation.

Makhubela said six stolen vehicles were also recovered.

A number of people were also arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

Those arrested would appear in various courts, including Orlando, Meadowlands, Roodepoort, Protea, Kliptown, Lenasia, and Vereeniging on Monday, Makhubela said.
