Police brutality condemned

2012-05-02 07:22

Johannesburg - The South African National Civic Organisation has expressed its anger about the assault of a hawker by four Johannesburg metro police officers, the organisation said on Tuesday.

"This act is uncalled for as we come from incidents of killings of the police by taxi driver and civilians. We condemned these killings of police a few days ago," spokesperson Dumisane Mthalane said in a statement.

"It becomes much (more) difficult when the men in uniform become thugs against innocent civilians."

Andries Ndlovu, 37, was beaten in Ivory Park, near Midrand, last Friday, apparently after he tried to stop the officers from beating a 60-year-old man, the Sunday Times reported.

A 22-second cellphone video of the attack was recorded by an onlooker. Officers are shown kicking and stamping on Ndlovu after he had fallen down, according to the weekly.

Condemnation

SANCO condemned police brutality and brutality committed against the police. The organisation called on police to "root out bad elements that tarnish" the police's image.

The officers allegedly beat up a 60-year-old welder, Joseph Khumalo, when he demanded a receipt or notice when his goods were impounded. Ndlovu asked the officers why they were assaulting Khumalo, he told the paper. He was punched in his face, and started to fight back.

Khumalo's two sons, Ananias and Michael, said they were also assaulted.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar asked the Sunday Times for a copy of the video so disciplinary action could be taken.

It's sad that in these days in order to be safe from criminals we have to give up our freedom and live in a Big Brother society

I thought this police act stoped long time ago since it was done durring apartheid era. The law must play it's role now

The Metro cops in Ivory Park,Ebony park and Thembisa confiscate pirated d.v.d's from the guys selling them and re-sell the very same discs to some piracy-syndicates who are doing the silly business far from where they confiscated them.e.g.They confiscate in Swazi-Inn(Thembisa)and drive to re-sale them in Ebony Park. One of the Metro cop's wife in Ebony park has opened a flee-market-selling whatever the husband got from yesterday's loot!!!

  • Vickers - 2012-05-02 08:24

This is not police brutality. These "spietkops" from the so called Metro police are not policemen. There are still a few real policemen in the SAPS trying to do their job under very difficult circumstances. The JHB Metro police are undissiplined thugs not worthy of the name police.

In a democratic society the police would fire the lot, then charge them with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and lock them. there are witnesses and evidence, what could be easier?? However, here this will be swept under the carpet like so many other cases.

it is useless for them to say this on us because the icd is there to protect them.

Why does news24 post the SAPS logo on this story when it's a JMPD issue? This gives the SAPS a bad name as can be seen by some of the comments below. A pictures says a thousand words. Get it right! I hope they charge the JMPD officers in question and they have a fair trial and sentencing according to the evidence that is put forward.

So yesterday the nnot so called Metro cops, after some of them read what i posted here in News24-they went out in full force to revenge by harassing the vendors in Ivory park,Ebony park Swazi-inn and surrounding arrears. They "confisicated" dogs lying by the steets, refusal bags left by the road side and so i've heard someone 's bakkie which has been packed by the road side was also "CONFISICATED"!!!They told the vendors that they were doing that in revenge of what has been posted in media. Now the question is:DOES THAT AFFECT ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL???YESSS,of course somebody who is trying to make a living and raising his/her children on selling by the street is victimised out of my SO TRUE COMMENTS.What is left here is WHO COMES OUT THERE IN PROTECTION OF THE POOREST OF THE POOR???In a nutshell,i think Metro cops think they have to get paid everyday by their silly operatins on confisicating vendors's stock or else you pay a bribe to sell by the street.THERE I GO AGAIN METRO!!!GO AND HARASS THEM AGAIN COZ PEOPLE ARE WATCHING,AND YOU STAND TO BE EXPOSED EVEN MOOOOORE!!!!

Make an example of them so that the others will mayb think twice before doing something illegal. They keep doing these things cause they know there is nothing going to happen to them.
