Police condemn sex-on-duty cop

2011-08-16 21:13

Johannesburg - Police management has condemned a police reservist for having sex with a correctional services official while on duty at Leratong Hospital.

The reservist embarrassed her colleagues and brought the police into disrepute, and her dismissal would serve as a warning to other officers, spokesperson Vishnu Naidoo said in a statement on Tuesday.

The front page of Monday's Sowetan newspaper, headlined "Sies!" was accompanied by photos of the act.

Naidoo however added that publishing the pictures was insensitive, particularly as children had access to the newspaper.

The Commission for Gender Equality and Media Monitoring Africa on Monday condemned the use of the photos, and questioned the way the Sowetan covered the story.

The commission's Javu Baloyi called for a public apology, and said the article was "shocking" and bordered on pornography.

"It is sad that a newspaper with the history and social position of the Sowetan would stoop so low."

In the context of the current debate on media regulation, publishing such images did little to strengthen arguments for a free media, Baloyi said.

Personal and explicit

"These images are so personal and so explicit that to use them in a public space, especially in the consumer media, is bordering on the propagation of pornography."

Media Monitoring Africa asked whether the story warranted such prominence and images.

"More fundamentally perhaps, what is the actual story, if not to sensationalise and thereby increase sales?"

In a statement, the organisation's William Bird said the story could have potentially devastating consequences for the families of both officers involved. According to the Sowetan both are married.

"It is not clear how considerations for their privacy were balanced against the desire to report the story."

He said the story could have focused instead on the response by the police and correctional services departments.

The man had been suspended and was facing disciplinary proceedings.

How can they be dismissed for bonking, perhaps it was there tea time? The one who took the pictures should be punished, one does not go around taking pics of this nature unless you are a little perverted

      Warren - 2011-08-16 22:08

@ frankm: Are you for real dude??? Both were in uniform in a public place, a HOSPITAL nogal... & you support & condone this behaviour, while chastising the photographer??? You must really like to get your freak on!!!

      frankm - 2011-08-16 22:23

I don't think they were in uniform at the time, its difficult to bonk when you are dressed and they were not in view of any of the public at the time. Why is this such a bad thing, have you never bonked at work?

      crackerr - 2011-08-16 22:54

The officer himself made the video recording. The woman was not even aware that he did it. Go to Sowetan and read the full story.

      Dogmatic - 2011-08-17 01:00

I also work in state and no I did not bonk at work even during lunch. I usually had my lunch at 11pm if I was lucky nevermind have time the get my freak on. You are encouraging 'nature' in a hospital, are you sick and maybe you need to be admitted. This behaviour is why our people in blue are killed and not due to criminals. I am all for adventurous bonking, but there is a time and definitely a place for that a hospital, like the morgue just makes me wonder. If you have not concluded yet I work in a hospital. How stupid and irresponsible.

      TBOOZE - 2011-08-17 09:27

have to admit it wouldn't mind having one of those at work........maybe its just my sick fantasy but its grate

      Opinionated - 2011-08-17 10:21

And they were both in uniform...

      PunkBuster - 2011-08-17 13:01

Warren I think everyone is a little perverted in their only little way. Its human nature to be curious...

  • coldwar - 2011-08-16 21:45

I believe the video was made by the officer himself and his colluges got hold of it. Thank you sowetan. Brutal pictures of murders are shown on front page newspapers now they complain about porn.

      zaatheist - 2011-08-17 04:22

A point that struck me immediately. It seems that graphic pictures of brutal murders with lots of blood and gore are OK but as soon as a naked breast or buttock is shown then it is pornography. I know which I prefer to see but then I am will probably be accused of being an abnormal pervert.

      kmothiba2 - 2011-08-17 09:39

sies this is digracing they shown ower children nonsence

  • GTM - 2011-08-16 21:52

Next time when you cheat, you must think twice!!!

  • Tiyane - 2011-08-16 22:28

    This is a mess.

  • crackerr - 2011-08-16 22:40

We are being treated with the usual attempts to discredit press freedom. Well done, Sowetan. You did the right thing. We as the public and community are entitled to know and to see what is going on. Those two are the cause of their own and others misfortune and misery. We must get out of the custom to protect wrongdoers and irresponsible persons. It is a pity that children may get hurt in the process but you cannot hide behind children for protection. Anyhow, children do watch TV and other visually active mediums. So spare us the red herrings about so-called harm to children and pornography.

      tksqqo - 2011-08-17 08:00

Praise Sowetan as much as you want... what about their kids... can you imagine the horror they facing???

      DandyLion - 2011-08-17 09:01

@tksqqo Don't you think these two bonkers should have thought of their families before they decided to bonk on public time? If they were not caught out, they would have gone on having sex instead of doing their jobs. Sies, I'm glad their dirty laundry is out for all to see. Shows what a bunch of degenerates South Africans are becoming!

      O-Kay - 2011-08-17 09:59

@tksqqo, when were they thinking aabout the consequences to their children??? They are responsible for their decisions, be it adultery or whatever, now the newspaper is accused of destroying their marriages?? Puh-leeze!

  • crackerr - 2011-08-16 22:49

One of the strongest motivations for correct behavior is the knowledge that the community, your social circle and your family may find out about your aberrations. Well done Sowetan for fulfilling your social and communal duties by reporting and reporting in the manner you did.

      alansmart223 - 2011-08-19 01:43

All they were doing was pleasing Malema and trying to do what they were asked to do.. Like all ANCYL members, they are dumb, illiterate and uninformed 'bout acceptable normal morals

  • teresa.mimi.williams - 2011-08-17 00:09

We've had instances before of police having sex while on duty, but nothing has happened in response to the reports. Perhaps this policewoman was fired so quickly specifically because the photos are shocking and embarrassing? Had the report appeared without photos, would any action have been taken against the people involved?

  • franklin - 2011-08-17 01:14

when duty calls= this is the service you get.

      Lol, very well said

  • Reasoning - 2011-08-17 07:26

the person who sent images to sowatan must be brought to book, sowetan's licence must be suspended we need pple who builds the country not destroying. this matter was suposed to be handling in a professional manner and be dealt with within the departments where the officers are employed. these stories are the ones which prompts the ban to media freedon and that was not freedom however negligent and abuse of rights.

      pure.black - 2011-08-17 07:40

The video is on you tube, its a public space.

      DandyLion - 2011-08-17 09:05

As a tax paying South African I have the right to know that my hard earned money is being used to pay people to have sex instead of serving and protecting me. I agree with your point, "we need pple who builds the country not destroying." - how are these two people, who are married to other persons, building the country by bonking in a public place and on public time?

      alansmart223 - 2011-08-19 01:46

      What about transparancy?

  • pure.black - 2011-08-17 07:43

Cmon guys, i dont think you should blame, Sowetan, the complete video is on You Tube, how more public can it get, Children or whoever is crying have more access to You Tube than Sowetan.

      tksqqo - 2011-08-17 08:02

if Sowetan didnt publish thier story, the video would be indemand as it is....

  • belinda234 - 2011-08-17 08:01

NEVER JUDGE FOR YOU TOO SHALL BE JUDGED!!!!

      Lyle - 2011-08-17 09:28

I believe it goes "Judge not, lest ye be judged". And in this case, when a policewoman is getting muffed and shafted, while on duty (which tax payers subsidize), I think it's well within our rights to judge. Think about in terms of salary and time. Every cent they earned while doing it, came out of our pockets. We were paying them on a stroke by stroke basis for the entirety of it. Still think we shouldn't judge? If that was me doing that, I should be judged as well

  • Dilika - 2011-08-17 08:12

All what that rag called The Sowetan wanted was to increase their dwindling sales. You should have seen one of their articles yesterday gloating about their newspaper being sold out by noon on the day. The two "officers" deserve to be fired though, not for the act but for stupidity.

  • Ann - 2011-08-17 08:17

This is just crazy - even worse is blatant photography that appeared on the front page of the Sowetan. It's just wrong!

      Benson - 2011-08-17 09:06

As the way Sowetan did I think I like it so that everyboby who use to do now he/she is going to learn a lesson. Our wifes they doing this sh!!t at work.

  • ihatum - 2011-08-17 08:23

This is being blown out of proportion. People bonk in all kind of places all the time. Just that one of these two was a moron to make a video. The woman should should sue him for that. Dismissal is too extreme. Only people who don't get l@1d enough would b1tch about this.

  • BigMoose - 2011-08-17 08:45

Every time I see a prison warder and a police officer, I will see pornographic images in my imagination. Not a pretty sight.

  • kovilen.reddy - 2011-08-17 08:56

i have the video. lol. if i went to a porn website i would habe given it a thumbs down or 0.5/10 rating. sigh.

lol....that was very bad sex. tht can only be regarded as the best masturbation technique.

  • DEVILS SON - 2011-08-17 09:02

please tell me they showered afterwards

      Lyle - 2011-08-17 09:30

Not sure they showered but I think they're going on a beetroot and root vegetable diet....just in case

  • Nono Makhubedu - 2011-08-17 09:07

that was explicit sex - not good for our kids - sowentan lacked morals on that reporting - it sshould be condemned at all costs even in future - the pair will receive their punishment

      rasbobo - 2011-08-18 14:49

correction that was not explicit sex....i dnt kno wat to call it. The news paper did good...that was news and the public wanted it...hence the news paper sold out. honestly if people did not want to be associated with such why waste your 2 rand, thts the only way you can show sowetan you dnt like their news.

  • Kurt - 2011-08-17 09:07

Firstly, a storm in a tea cup... only purpose most probably for you not to notice another page (in very small print) that the government intends to increase personal tax by say 300%. Secondly, never never never ever take a camera into the 'bedroom'....it will bite you when least expected.

  • pandel - 2011-08-17 09:09

publishing such images its in national newspaper was insansative. But what do you expectect from sowetan after the publish racist cartoon. Soweto is turning to be daily sun

  • Gaina - 2011-08-17 15:26

Do they have no control over their behaviour? Why bonk in a public space, they are not animals. take responsibility for your actions, I bet they weren t thinking of their kids when they did it.

  • funkmasterswiss - 2011-08-17 17:01

wats wrong wit da world how on earth can you display people having sex on yo front page thats disgusting and disrespectful to tha community and yo buyers jus like wat happenned to tha News Of The World on that scandal of a MISSING TEENAGE GAL IN BRITAIN teenage they were forced 2 close.i think that can serve as a good example 2 tha Sowetan although they dispose tha best scandal so far big up 2 tham for that.

  • Sbongile - 2011-08-18 08:34

i can say what they did was terebly wrong but the media were suppose to give them their privacy to because what will happen about their families and husband and wife they could kill them selves for heaven sake south africans lets do right.

  • Bonita - 2011-08-18 10:07

It is not the fault of the newspaper it was relesed to them. The cops shuold not have been doing this in the first place and that at work while on duty. Thank you Sowetan for bringing facts to the public. It is within public interest that the people we entrust to uphold the law could and can stoop this low. So keep up the good work in exposing the way the country is governed. Well done Sowetan. Leonie Adams

  • Masi4mbise - 2011-08-18 12:31

    THIS WAS TERREBLE WRONG.

  • dolz - 2011-08-18 19:48

The editor’s morale integrity is none existent; the piece could have been published in a more discreet way yet still exposing the filth within all our government institutions. Yes he got the record sales and will be deemed as a ‘fearless editor’ but what about the families of the two individuals and the picture you have painted about your management style and ethics never mind what we think of the Sowetan because its reputation has been tarnished as is with recent scandals linked to the paper. The article should read “SIES I AM A LOUSY EDITOR!!!”

  • dylan makadzange - 2011-08-19 18:33

iam sure this is a trauma not only them are victims they are many of them doing those games they need to be dismissed officially no room for negotiations because that's a disgrace to the community

  • sechabaw - 2011-08-20 05:32

This is unfair why dismiss the woman and suspend the man? they should both be dismissed

  • Nnete-ke-Nnete - 2011-08-31 11:22

Its appaling that a giant such as the sowetan would stoop so low to increase their sales. What those people did was natural, they should have done that at their own private places. Irrespective Sowetan had no right to destroy these peoples lives. The famailies will bear the brunt of this. Appalled at Sowetan.

  • Collitjies - 2011-09-13 15:20

These front page head lines and photos sell news papers that is all the Sowetan set out to achieve and did just that. To hell with the fact that a person/s would get dismissed that is the least of their worries. The news paper should face a heavy fine for doing what it did.
