Police fire rubber bullets at protesters

2011-12-16 11:44

Johannesburg - Police fired rubber bullets to disperse over 300 people who protested over service delivery at Ottoshoop, near Mahikeng, on Friday, the North West public safety department said.

"Police used teargas and fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd, who [then] ran into the bushes," spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said.

Protesters had barricaded the R49 road between Mahikeng and Zeerust with stones and burning tyres since 03:00.

Kgwele said two front tyres of a passing VW Polo were punctured after the driver drove over the scattered stones on the road. No one was injured.

"Police have reopened the road but we advise motorists to use other alternative roads until safety is fully restored."

Residents from a nearby informal settlement have been demanding housing since August.

Kgwele said Human Settlements MEC Desbo Mohono, Mahikeng Local Municipality Mayor Lena Miga and the residents held a meeting in September.

"It was agreed in the meeting that 107 housing units would soon be increased to 400 for beneficiaries in that area."

The meeting followed another protest over housing provision in the previous month.

Think outside the South African context that we are brainwashed into...they demand free houses...what the f@ck, if you claim that blacks are equal to whites in all aspects, let them work for their own houses. If the can't do that then atleast admit they are inferior and require help to live like normal people.

Quite right, and whilst we're at it, stop breeding like rabbits if you can't even manage to move out of your shack, I am tired of paying for your annual litter because you can't manage a simple concept like birth control

There's no equality in this country. Apartheid wasn't right but what is going on now? Isn't it the same thing? Dare you say it out loud and then you're either a racist or you deserve it for all the wrongs apartheid did - whether you had anything to do with it or not! They want land back that their ancestors sold centuries ago, that's like me going to Europe demanding my piece of land because 400 years ago my ancestors lived in Europe...are you kidding me? What kind of mentality is that? I'm so sick of the "new" south africa that hasn't done a bloody thing for my generation! But dare complain and the white card gets thrown at you. Well stuff this corrupt government, stuff the anc and stuff all the sheep out there that believe in their cause! I'm just going to sit here patiently and wait for you idiots to destroy yourselves because with the lack of intelligence amongst the lot of you, it's inevitable!
