Johannesburg - Three more men, of at least 15 who gang raped a woman near Driefontein Number Five shaft in Carletonville, were still on the run, police said on Saturday.
Twelve of the alleged rapists were arrested on Thursday.
"The three other men are still being sought, police are following on every lead they can get," said spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.
The 23-year-old woman and her friend were on their way home to Mpahla Village, in Carletonville, on Wednesday when they were confronted by illegal miners.
The 23-year-old was hit on the head with a knobkerrie before being dragged to nearby bushes where she was raped by at least 12 men. Her friend escaped without physical injury.
Dlamini said the men then took the woman to a shack where another three men then raped her.
She sustained multiple injuries on the head, face and body, and was taken to hospital.
The 12 men, whom police said were illegal miners from Lesotho, are expected to appear in Carletonville Magistrate's Court on Monday.
