Johannesburg - Police were searching for 10 people linked to an attempted cash-in-transit robbery in which one security guard was killed and another injured on Industrial Road, Springs, on Monday morning, Gauteng police said.

"Suspects, who were armed with rifles and hand guns used a Toyota double cab van to push out of the road a security guard's vehicle carrying an undisclosed amount of cash," spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

"As the vehicle hit the barrier, the suspects also attacked another vehicle escorting the other one.

"Several shots were then fired with rifles and handguns at the escorting vehicle, killing the driver and injuring another."

The robber then jumped into a silver Mercedez Benz and an Audi, with unknown registration numbers, and fled the scene.

The injured guard was shot in the lower body and was recovering in a hospital in Springs, Dlamini said.

The Toyota double cab van, which was abandoned at the scene, had not been reported stolen with police continuing to investigate who owned the vehicle.

Earlier, Ekurhuleni metro police said the robbery took place around 11:00.
