Cape Town - Police used stun grenades to “defuse” a situation in Manenberg, Cape Town, where violence flared up again on Saturday.

In a statement, Lieutenant Colonel Andre Traut said police responded after two groups of people began shooting and throwing stones at one another at about 10.30 on Saturday.

Residents said some people were shooting at others with machine guns.

“Stun grenades were used to defuse the situation, which is currently being monitored,” said Traut.

He said, however, no one was injured or arrested but police will remain on the alert in the area to maintain law and order.

“We will not allow gangsters to practise their activities in our communities and put the lives of the public in danger.”
