Police probe church stairs collapse

2009-12-13 18:15

Johannesburg - Police and fire services are investigating the cause of a staircase collapse at a church in the CBD, says ER24 spokesperson LLoyd Krause.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks says 84 people were hurt in the accident at the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God on Eloff and Plein streets and not 94 as earlier reported.

"The final number is 84, there was a communication mix-up. We apologise for that," Wicks said.

The stair case collapsed shortly after noon and fell on congregants. One person was critically injured, 24 were seriously injured and a further 59 sustained minor to moderate injuries.

The injured churchgoers were taken to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital and the Hillbrow clinic.
