Johannesburg - About 15 people were still at large on Monday after shooting dead seven people in Crystal Park, Benoni, on the East Rand, Gauteng police said.

"There hasn't been anything new," said Lieutenant Colonel Katlego Mogale.

Three men, two women and a girl, aged 2, were killed and four others were critically wounded during a shooting at Chief Albert Luthuli informal settlement at around 21:20 on Saturday.

One of the wounded died on the way to hospital, bringing the death toll to seven.

Mogale said a group of about 15 people armed with pistols and rifles shot at a group of people standing at a spaza shop in the area.

The motive for the shootings was unclear. Police suspected that it might be related to illegal mining, Mogale said.

They were searching for the suspects.

The three wounded people remained in a critical condition in hospital, she said.
