Johannesburg - A robber has been shot dead and 12 people arrested on the West Rand, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

The robber was killed in a shoot-out with the police, who were chasing him and an accomplice from the scene of a robbery at a shop in Roodepoort on Wednesday, said Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini. The other robber was arrested.

"Police recovered a 9mm pistol and cash stolen from the shop," he said.

The other arrests were part of a joint operation, with other law enforcement agencies and officials, in the lead up to the festive season.

Dlamini said they removed illegal electrical connections, and seized cables and electrical wires worth R300 000 at the Princess Crossing informal settlement.

They arrested three people for distributing contraband cigarettes in Diepsloot and Honeydew.

Five people were arrested in Diepsloot: two of them for possession of dagga worth about R10 000 on the street, two for possession of stolen goods, and one for illegally selling liquor.

In the Roodepoort CBD, liquor outlets were raided, and expired and illegal alcohol was seized. A Roodepoort hotel was fined for non-compliance with liquor legislation.

"Four suspected stolen vehicles were also recovered: two at Roodepoort CBD, one abandoned at the West Gate Mall parking lot, and the other in Honeydew. The vehicles were stolen in Soshanguve, Roodepoort and Kagiso," said Dlamini.

"Three suspects were arrested and will be charged with possession of suspected stolen vehicles."

Johannesburg metro police also issued fines totalling more than R5 000 to motorists for, among other things, using cellphones while driving.
