Durban - Several police units descended on the new King Shaka International Airport in Durban on Thursday to display how they will handle life-threatening situations such as plane hijackings and hostages during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The simulation showed how the police will deal with airborne and landborne threats.

During the simulation, a hijacked plane was forced to touch down by a police helicopter.

Various police units such as the bomb disposal units, search and rescue units as well as snipers and hostage negotiators were on the scene.

The exercise, which was held at the airport’s cargo section, was attended by General Bheki Cele, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Dr Zweli Mkhize and community liaison MEC, Willies Mchunu.
