Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police have lauded a province-wide crackdown on stock thieves after 276 heads of livestock were recovered.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said the joint operation by various stock theft units in the province had included operatives from the crime intelligence unit.

“The operation yielded positive results when they recovered a total of 276 suspected stolen livestock in the northern part of KwaZulu-Natal.

“The operation stretched over two weeks, with the team undertaking farm visits, normal patrols, controlling movement of stock and visiting livestock pounds and abattoirs. Recovered livestock includes 251 stolen cattle, 17 goats, six sheep and two horses,” he said.

An unlicensed pistol and dagga was also snared in the police dragnet.

“All recovered stock was positively identified and returned to the lawful owners. Twelve suspects were arrested for stealing livestock, six for animal identification, four for possession of dagga, one for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition and one for selling liquor without a licence,” Zwane added.
