Police union welcomes training move

2012-07-04 22:02

Johannesburg - The SA Policing Union (Sapu) on Wednesday welcomed a new move to train all police officers in basic detective work.

General secretary Oscar Skommere said the re-enforcement of the detective and investigative arms of the police would improve service delivery.

"This is long overdue; our normal crime prevention and officers in charge office[s] get exposed to hardened criminals, they need comprehensive training to fight that," he said.

"Sapu is of the opinion that this will also minimise the commonly used scapegoat of using [blaming] police when there is failure in securing convictions."

Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa said on Tuesday police would be able to secure harsher convictions in court by thorough detective work.

His spokesperson, Zweli Minisi, said some new recruits had already started basic detective training.

What the hell have you been teaching them at boot camp if not how to detect crime?!! Oh yeah, cadre deployment, how to be corrupt, drive like a moron with your lights flashing, how to accept bribes, how to extort bribes, looking the other way when your buddies are breaking the law, shooting innocent people. did i leave anything out? Not long ago it was announced most police officers haven't been trained in the use of firearms, now this.

Uhhhhhh, basic detective work was already done 20 years ago in the police college in Pretoria part of your basic training. Suppose after 94 some AA wise ass 'guru' decided it was a waste and canned it... EISH WENA!

Martin i agree, everything changed after 1994. i remember my training in 1991 and it included detective work.

Basic detective curriculum Lesson one: How to not contaminate the crime scene Lesson two: Don't sell the evidence If they are not learning basic detective work during training, then what do they learn?

Will they also be made to jack up on their fitness and firearm training?

Start with reading. Then counting..... And then you can take it from there: )

Rather train them in basic police work, because most of them don't even know what it takes to be a police officer!

Am i wrong or should this not have been covered on successful application to SAP. Oh wait i forgot - in SA the right criteria is to be a criminal. Now they think that having a "new" training set up for basic detective work is something that they dreamt up - oh shame i really feel sorry for these guys they have no idea.

What the hell is the Police Training College for. You cannot even get them through basic training. Learn the meaning of the verb to POLICE. Crime will speedily come down and you will not have to chase convictions after the crime is committed. Get the lazy corrupt thugs doing what they have CONTRACTED with the PEOPLE for. PROTECT and SERVE. You are the SERVANT not the CLEANER or even worse deluding yourself that you are the MASTER.
