Police woman plays Dr Dolittle

Johannesburg - Even a rat is getting some Christmas cheer after a Wolmaransstad policewoman came to the rescue of a menagerie of abandoned animals, North West police said on Monday.

Sergeant Karen Tredoux said over the weekend, a "concerned" member of the public phoned the police about animals that had been left to fend for themselves, after their owner apparently left them unattended for two weeks.

"A constable from the Wolmaransstad police station took it upon herself to water and feed the animals, which included two adult pigs, two piglets, eighteen chickens, seven ducks, ten rabbits, two turkeys, nine mice and a rat."

The SPCA's Stilfontein branch was contacted by police to help move the animals to a small holding in Makwassie, where they will receive the appropriate care.

The animal welfare organisation intends to open a case of cruelty to animals.
