Johannesburg - A police officer was shot dead in his driveway in Kagiso, Gauteng police said on Sunday.

Lieutenant Colonel Knox Chauke, 56, was shot several times in his upper body and died at the scene on Friday morning, Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said.

"He collapsed and died next to his vehicle," said Dlamini.

The officer, who was attached to the national training division of the SA Police Service, was on his way to work and was closing his gate when he was attacked by the unknown number of people.

No one witnessed the shooting but neighbours said they heard several shots being fired, said Dlamini.

The motive of the shooting was unknown.

Police were investigating.
