Johannesburg - A KwaZulu-Natal police officer was shot and killed and another wounded at Midmar Dam, Howick, on Wednesday morning, police said.

Two men in a bakkie robbed a security guard at a diesel storage facility of his cellphone and wallet, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

When police found the bakkie driving in the area, its occupants opened fire. Both officers were hit.

One was declared dead on arrival at a local hospital. The second was in a serious condition.

The gunmen's vehicle was later found abandoned.

Inside police found a 9mm gun, four electric detonators and commercial explosives.

The gunmen were still at large, said Mdunge.
