Johannesburg - A police officer was killed in a shoot-out at the Jeppe hostel on Saturday, said Johannesburg police.

The officer had responded to a robbery of a delivery truck at the hostel's entrance, said Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale.

"The truck had come to deliver bread at the various spaza [shops] in the hostel when it was held at gunpoint by four suspects," Mogale said.

"They forced their way onto the truck [and] stole about R1 500 from the driver."

The robbers headed to the back of the truck and as they attempted to break the safe, the truck driver fled the scene and went to the Jeppe police station to ask for help.

"[Police officers] ... arrived at the scene and a shoot-out ensued during which the member was injured in the neck. He was rushed to hospital where he was certified dead on arrival," said Mogale.

One of the alleged robbers was also injured during the shoot-out.

He was in hospital under police guard.

Police had launched a search for the other three suspects.

The four would face charges of murder, attempted murder and armed robbery.
