Johannesburg - A police officer shot and killed his girlfriend in North West on Thursday, the provincial police said.

Captain Amanda Funani said a 33-year-old constable allegedly shot his 32-year-old girlfriend at Geelhout Park, in Rustenburg, before he turned the gun on himself.

She said the couple had an argument. The neighbours heard gunshots and called the Tlhabane police.

"When the police arrived at the scene they found the two bodies lying on the floor with gunshot wounds. It is suspected that the member shot his girlfriend and then himself."

She said no foul play was suspected. A case of murder and an inquest has been opened.

In another incident a police constable allegedly shot his girlfriend and he was later found dead with a bullet wound, his firearm next to his body at Modimong, near Taung, on Christmas Day.

The 26-year-old constable allegedly had an argument with his 21-year-old girlfriend at a tavern.

He left the tavern with the woman in a car and drove into the bushes.

She was later found handcuffed to a tree with a gunshot wound to the hip.

The constable's body was found nearby. It was believed that he shot himself. The woman was taken to Taung Hospital for treatment.

Captain Funani said police management was appealing to police officers to use the available services of health wellness officers when they feel depressed or have problems coping.
