2012-01-30 22:45

Johannesburg - A policeman was stabbed in the neck with a homemade knife when a murder suspect tried to escape from the Vereeniging Regional Court on Monday, police said.

"The victim screamed for help saying: 'Escape, stop that guy', repeatedly," said Captain Shado Mashobane. Other policemen came to his aid after the attack in the court holding cells.

Mashobane said the policeman was taken to hospital and was in a stable condition.

The 27-year-old suspect was caught before he could escape.

He already had 11 cases against him and was due to appear in court on Monday for a murder in Orange Farm.

He now faced the added charges of attempted murder and attempted escape from lawful custody, said Mashobane.

Give him a 'guilty until proven guilty on all charges' type of trial.

Why are dangerous criminals not shackled from the time they leave their cells [or holding cell] until they are returned? I mean properly....hands behind back, ankles together, then together from wrists to ankles. You can't do much like that nos, can you!
