Polokwane court fire

The Polokwane Magistrate's Court caught fire forcing a quick evacuation. Eyewitnesses estimate 80% of the building has been leveled by the flames. See the pictures.

Polokwane - The roof of the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court collapsed following a huge fire on Friday.

A witness who works close to the court building, Humbelani Tshikumaana, told News24 that it looked as if the “whole building is down now”.

Tshikumaana said some of the awaiting trial prisoners had been evacuated from the court holding cells, but it was unclear if all of them had been evacuated.

Emergency workers treated people for smoke inhalation.

Reports said that it appeared as if the fire began in one of the magistrate’s offices but this could not yet be confirmed.

Two big cases were set to be heard at the court on Friday - that of an ANC politician alleged to have raped a 19-year old woman, and 12 suspects accused of being involved in a rhino poaching syndicate.
