Johannesburg - The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) on Friday condemned the escape of prisoners from the Pretoria Central prison earlier in the week.

Dliswa Mthimkhulu, Popcru spokesperson, called upon the department of correctional services to uphold and fully implement the provisions of a member-prisoner ratio to stop future occurrences.

"All correctional facilities are to be safely guarded by dedicated and committed correctional officers in an effort to keep all of us safe."

Mthimkhulu said the security of officers and the community was a priority and should not be comprised by negligence.

"We applaud all the correctional officers for the work they did to apprehend the prisoners."

The three convicts, Bongani Moyo, Themba Dube and Khumbulani Sibanda escaped from Pretoria Central prison on Tuesday.

After they were rearrested they were quizzed in front of the cameras by Correctional Services Minister, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and Correctional Services Commissioner Tom Moyane.

The minister said she suspected the men were helped to escape by correctional services' staff.
